SMALL GROUP MANAGEMENT TIP:
You are busy teaching a small group but need to call another group to your table. Your groups change from day to day, based upon student needs. Make this time a calm and non-disrupting event by using a whiteboard and a bell. Once you finish with one small group, simple write the names of the next group of students on the whiteboard, ring the bell, and hold up the whiteboard. Teach students to FREEZE and LOOK when they hear the bell. If a student sees their name, they are to stop what they are doing and come to the table. They may need to clean up first. These are the kinds of classroom management routines that once taught, results in more learning time.
ADDING MOVEMENT TO RETELLING :
Getting students up and moving while learning is going to not only help them remember but also give them a positive reason to move! We don't like to sit for hours in teacher meetings, do we? Well, our students don't like to sit for hours in our class either. Giving students movement opportunities is important to keep them alert, focused and engaged. When you combine movement with specific skills, you are creating connections between movement and learning. That is why I invented and created the FICTION & NONFICION "Walk It & Talk It" (c) Story Elements Retelling Paths- to give students a fun way to move, learn, remember story elements and retell. I like to call on one student to share each day after independent reading time. I guide students as needed as they walk the path.

What's the Difference?
This was a "2 a.m. can't sleep" idea that I was so excited about ...I call them Subtraction Sliders (c)! I used pipe cleaners, beads, washers and a metal ring to hold it all together. The point is for students to slide the beads to subtract.
Let's say the number sentence is 15-4 then the
students would find the "15" slider and slide 4 away to find the difference. Easy to make... takes a little time, but easy. I am excited for students to have this hands-on visual to use for subtracting. Great project for parent volunteers to assemble. What is nice about the washers is that it holds down the Subtraction Slider so students can easily move the beads. You could, of course, find other ways to assemble, if desired.
